Welcome to another episode of the Health for the Spirit, Soul, and Body Blog from Doxa Missions. Today, we’re looking at a topic that can radically change your life if you embrace its truth: The Power of Your Words.
As believers, we know that our words have creative power. The Bible clearly lays out the principle that we have what we say. Mark 11:23 says, “For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith” (KJV).
Yet, even with this knowledge, it’s easy to slip into worldly patterns of speech—complaining, speaking doubt, or agreeing with negative situations. If your words aren’t aligned with God’s promises, it’s time to make a shift. The miracle you’re seeking could be as close as the words on your lips.
Let’s dive into five practical, biblical steps to help you speak words that bring life and blessings into every area of your life.
Recognize the Spiritual Nature of Your Words
Taming the tongue isn’t something we can do through willpower alone. James 3:7-8 makes this clear: “For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison” (KJV).
Does this mean we’re hopeless? Not at all! It simply means we need to rely on God’s wisdom, not our own strength. According to Proverbs 2:6, “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding” (KJV). God’s Word is our source of spiritual strength, and His words are described as “spirit and life” in John 6:63.
To change how you speak, you first need to fill your heart and mind with God’s Word. As Jesus said in Luke 6:45, “A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good... for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh” (KJV). What you meditate on will eventually flow out of your mouth.
Repent and Dedicate Your Tongue to God
Before you can move forward, take time to repent for any negative, harmful, or faithless words you’ve spoken in the past. Acknowledge those moments where you may have complained, gossiped, or spoken doubt over yourself or others. God is faithful to forgive when we come to Him with a humble heart (1 John 1:9).
After repentance, consciously dedicate your tongue to God’s purposes. Make the decision to speak words of life, faith, love, and encouragement. Psalms 141:3 says, “Set a watch, O Lord, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips” (KJV). Pray this regularly and ask the Holy Spirit to help you guard your speech.
By doing this, you’re positioning yourself to speak words that will shape your future according to God’s plan.
Be Mindful of What You Hear and Say
In Mark 4:24, Jesus says, “Take heed what ye hear” (KJV). This warning isn’t just about what we hear from others, but it also applies to what we say to ourselves. Every time you speak, you are planting a seed. If you find yourself saying something negative, pause and ask, “Do I really want this to come to pass in my life?” If the answer is no, stop and correct it immediately.
Instead of speaking doubt, replace your words with praise and thanksgiving. Ephesians 5:4 encourages us to let our speech be filled with thanksgiving rather than negativity. Even in difficult situations, you can train yourself to say, “Lord, I trust You,” instead of complaining.
Change Your Words, Change Your Life
If you’ve been careless with your words, today is a good day to start fresh. Ask God to help you speak intentionally. Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (KJV).
Think of your words as seeds. When you consistently speak God’s promises, you’re planting seeds of life, peace, and prosperity. On the other hand, negative words can plant seeds of fear, doubt, and confusion. The good news is that you have the power to uproot the bad seeds by replacing them with words of faith.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to guide your conversations. He will remind you when you’re about to speak out of fear or frustration and help you choose life-giving words instead.
Speak Words of Life and Faith
Jesus set the perfect example for us. He spoke with authority, declaring life and truth in every situation, whether calming a storm or raising the dead. You have that same power available through the Word of God.
In moments of uncertainty, speak what God says, not what you feel. For example, if you’re facing a financial struggle, instead of saying, “I’ll never get out of this,” declare Philippians 4:19: “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus” (KJV).
Speak healing over your body, peace over your family, and victory over your challenges. The more you speak faith, the more your heart will believe it, and you’ll see God’s promises come to pass.
Conclusion: There Is a Miracle in Your Mouth (The Power of Your Words)
The words you speak carry spiritual power. By recognizing the spiritual nature of your speech, repenting, dedicating your tongue to God, being mindful of your words, and consistently speaking life, you can transform your reality.
Remember, as Proverbs 18:21 reminds us, your tongue holds the power of life and death. Choose life every time. When you speak God’s Word, you are releasing His power into your circumstances. Indeed, there is a miracle in your mouth—use it wisely!
