Trust God’s Plan: How to Let Go and Let Him Work in Unexpected Ways

Writer's picture: Dr DagbueDr Dagbue

Welcome to another episode of the Health for the Spirit, Soul, and Body Blog from Doxa Missions. Today, we’re diving into a topic that resonates with many of us: trusting God’s plan, even when it doesn’t align with our expectations.

Life often surprises us with twists and turns that leave us feeling confused, disappointed, or even frustrated. But as Christians, we know that God’s plans are perfect—even when we don’t fully understand them. Romans 8:28 reminds us of this powerful truth:

"And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose" (KJV).

This promise is both comforting and challenging. It assures us that God is in control, but it also calls us to let go of our own expectations and allow Him to work in His own way. Let’s explore this concept by unpacking the story of Naaman, a personal testimony, and practical ways to let go and trust God’s plan.

Naaman’s Healing: A Lesson in Trusting God’s Plan

One of the clearest biblical examples of trusting God’s plan comes from the story of Naaman in 2 Kings 5:1-14. Naaman was a respected general in the Syrian army—a man of power and influence—but he suffered from leprosy, a debilitating and humiliating condition.

Naaman’s journey to healing began with an unlikely source: a young Israelite servant girl in his household. She told Naaman’s wife about a prophet in Israel—Elisha—who could heal him. Acting on this information, Naaman went to his king, who sent him with a letter to the king of Israel.

The king of Israel, alarmed and fearing a diplomatic crisis, was unsure how to respond. But Elisha, the prophet of God, intervened and invited Naaman to his home.

Now, here’s where the story gets interesting. Instead of coming out to greet Naaman personally, Elisha sent a messenger with a simple instruction:

"Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean" (2 Kings 5:10, KJV).

This response infuriated Naaman. As a man of great stature, he expected Elisha to come out, meet him with honor, and perform an elaborate healing ritual. The Jordan River, known for its muddy waters, seemed beneath him—surely there were cleaner rivers in Syria! Disappointed and insulted, Naaman turned away in anger.

But one of his servants reasoned with him:

"My father, if the prophet had bid thee do some great thing, wouldest thou not have done it? How much rather then, when he saith to thee, Wash, and be clean?" (2 Kings 5:13, KJV).

Humbled by these words, Naaman decided to obey. He dipped himself in the Jordan seven times, and the result was nothing short of miraculous—his skin was restored like that of a child.

Naaman’s healing teaches us an important lesson: God’s ways are often unexpected, but they always lead to His perfect will. Trusting God’s plan sometimes requires us to set aside our pride, adjust our expectations, and follow His instructions—even when they seem unusual or insignificant.

When Our Plans Don’t Match God’s

This story resonates deeply because it reflects how we often approach God with our own expectations. We may pray for Him to move in a specific way or open a particular door, but His response can look entirely different from what we envisioned.

Isaiah 55:8-9 reminds us:

"For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts" (KJV).

God’s perspective is infinitely greater than ours. He sees the end from the beginning and knows exactly what we need to fulfill His purpose for our lives. Yet, in our limited understanding, we can struggle to trust Him, especially when His methods seem unclear or when life doesn’t go as planned.

A Personal Testimony of Trusting God’s Plan

Let me share a personal testimony that illustrates this point. During the global pandemic, our business was struggling. It was a difficult season, full of uncertainty and challenges. At that time, God gave me an idea to consolidate and expand our business—a vision that felt bold and almost impossible given the circumstances.

A friend, who had been financially blessed, offered to help support this vision. He encouraged me to create a business plan, and I felt confident that this was the answer to my prayers. I put together a solid plan, secured a new location, and even made significant commitments, such as committing to purchase equipment.

However, just when I thought everything was falling into place, my friend was unable to fulfill his financial promise. I was left in a difficult position, with major commitments and no clear way to move forward.

At first, I was devastated. I had been so sure that this opportunity was how God intended to bless me. But as I prayed and sought His guidance, I began to see things differently. Instead of focusing on what I had lost, I looked for alternative solutions.

God provided resources in unexpected ways, and I was able to execute the expansion in phases. By the end of the process, not only was the clinic fully operational, but I had achieved it without taking out a major loan or giving up full ownership of our business. In hindsight, I realized that God’s plan was far better than my own.

How to Trust God’s Plan in Everyday Life

Trusting God’s plan doesn’t always come naturally, especially when His ways seem unclear or counterintuitive. However, there are practical steps we can take to let go of our expectations and align ourselves with His will:

1. Surrender Your Expectations

When we approach God with rigid expectations, we risk missing His direction. Pray and release your plans to Him, asking for His will to be done in your life. Trust that He knows what’s best.

2. Stay Obedient

Naaman’s healing came only after he obeyed Elisha’s instructions, even though they didn’t make sense to him at first. Sometimes, God calls us to step out in faith, even when we don’t see the full picture. Trust Him enough to follow His lead.

3. Remember His Faithfulness

When life feels uncertain, reflect on God’s faithfulness in the past. Romans 8:28 assures us that He is working all things for our good, even when we can’t see it. Trust that He will come through in His perfect timing.

Trusting God’s Plan Leads to Blessings

Naaman’s story and my personal testimony both highlight this truth: trusting God’s plan, even when it doesn’t make sense, leads to blessings that are greater than anything we could imagine.

You may be facing a situation right now where life isn’t going as you expected. Perhaps you’ve prayed for God to move in a specific way, but the answer hasn’t come—or it has come in a way you didn’t anticipate. Be encouraged by this: God is still at work, and His plans are always for your good.

Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us:

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (KJV).

Thank you for joining me on this episode of the Health for the Spirit, Soul, and Body Blog. Have you ever experienced a time when trusting God’s plan led to unexpected blessings? I’d love to hear your story in the comments below. Let’s encourage one another to let go and let God lead the way!
