The Power of a Mother’s Love reminds us that faith, courage, and compassion can shape generations

Welcome to another episode of the Health for the Spirit, Soul, and Body Blog from Doxa Missions. Today, we're looking at the power of a mother’s love and the strength of mothers in the Bible.
Mother’s Day is a beautiful time set aside to honor mothers, grandmothers, spiritual mothers, mothers-to-be, and all women who pour love, wisdom, prayer, and care into the lives of others. While Mother’s Day itself was not originally established as a biblical or church holiday, the purpose behind it lines up beautifully with Scripture. The Bible teaches us to honor, value, and appreciate those who have nurtured us, guided us, and helped shape our lives.
In different parts of the world, Mother’s Day is celebrated on different dates. For example, the United Kingdom and some other countries observe it at a different time than the United States and the Caribbean. But wherever and whenever it is celebrated, the heart of the day remains the same: to pause, reflect, and say thank you.
By the end of this post, you’ll be encouraged to see the power of a mother’s love through the eyes of Scripture and to honor the mothers and mother figures God has placed in your life.
Honoring Parents Every Day: A Biblical Mandate
The Bible does not tell us to honor our parents only once a year. It teaches us that honor should be part of our daily lives.
Ephesians 6:2-3 (KJV) says:
“Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.”
This is a powerful promise. God connects honor with blessing, wellness, and long life. To honor means to value, respect, appreciate, and treat someone as important. It does not mean every family situation is perfect. It does not mean every relationship is without pain or difficulty. But it does mean that, as believers, we are called to walk with humility, wisdom, forgiveness, and love where possible.
Mother’s Day gives us a special opportunity to express what should already be living in our hearts: gratitude. A simple “thank you,” a phone call, a prayer, a visit, a message, or an act of kindness can mean more than we realize.
Celebrating Biological, Spiritual, and Expectant Mothers
When we speak about mothers, we should remember that motherhood is expressed in many ways. Some women give birth physically. Some nurture children spiritually. Some mentor, teach, pray, encourage, and guide others with the heart of a mother. Some are preparing for motherhood. Some long to be mothers and may carry silent pain on days like Mother’s Day.
So, as we celebrate, we should do so with tenderness.
There are biological mothers who have carried children in their wombs. There are adoptive mothers who have opened their homes and hearts. There are grandmothers who have stepped in and raised generations. There are spiritual mothers in the church who have prayed people through difficult seasons. There are women who may not have children of their own but have mothered many through love, counsel, and care.
All of these expressions remind us of the power of a mother’s love.
Women’s Special Place in God’s Creation
The Bible shows us that women hold a special place in God’s creation and purpose. In Genesis, God created woman with intentionality and beauty.
Genesis 2:22 (KJV) says:
“And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.”
Woman was not an afterthought. She was God’s idea. She was created with purpose, dignity, and value. In biblical times, many cultures placed limitations on women, yet Scripture still highlights women who acted with wisdom, courage, faith, and strength.
Think about some of the mothers and women in the Bible:
Bathsheba, the mother of Solomon, played a key role in securing her son’s place on the throne. Her story reminds us that mothers can carry wisdom and influence in critical moments.
Rahab, who became part of the family line of Christ, showed courage and faith when she protected the spies in Jericho. Her life reminds us that God can redeem any story and use anyone who trusts Him.
Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist, waited for many years before receiving her miracle. Her life speaks to patience, faithfulness, and God’s perfect timing.
Mary, the mother of Jesus, stands as one of the most beautiful examples of surrender and sacrificial love. She said yes to God’s plan even though she did not fully know all it would cost her.
These women were not perfect, but they were purposeful. Their lives remind us that God often works through willing hearts, faithful prayers, and courageous obedience.
The Power of a Mother’s Love in the Canaanite Woman
One of the most moving stories about a mother’s love is found in Matthew 15. A Canaanite woman came to Jesus because her daughter was suffering. She was not part of the Jewish community. She had no social advantage. She had no special invitation. But she had something powerful: faith.
Matthew 15:22 (KJV) says:
“And, behold, a woman of Canaan came out of the same coasts, and cried unto him, saying, Have mercy on me, O Lord, thou Son of David; my daughter is grievously vexed with a devil.”
Notice her cry: “Have mercy on me.” Her daughter was the one suffering, but the mother felt the pain as though it were her own. That is often how a mother’s heart works. When the child hurts, the mother hurts. When the child is in danger, the mother rises. When the child needs prayer, the mother keeps pressing in.
At first, Jesus did not answer her immediately. Then the conversation became even more difficult. But this woman did not walk away offended. She stayed humble. She stayed focused. She stayed full of faith.
Matthew 15:27-28 (KJV) says:
“And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table. Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour.”
What a powerful moment. Jesus praised her faith, and her daughter was healed.
This mother teaches us something important: love does not give up easily. Faith keeps knocking. Prayer keeps reaching. Hope keeps believing. She was willing to press past silence, barriers, and discouragement because her daughter needed a miracle.
That is the power of a mother’s love.
Encouragement for Mothers Who Feel They Have Fallen Short
Mother’s Day can bring joy, but it can also bring reflection. Some mothers may look back and feel they did not do enough. Some may carry regrets. Some may wonder if they failed their children in certain ways. Some may feel tired, unseen, or overwhelmed.
Be encouraged: as long as there is life, there is hope.
Luke 1:37 (KJV) says:
“For with God nothing shall be impossible.”
God is able to heal relationships. God is able to restore broken places. God is able to give wisdom for the next season. God is able to help you become the mother, mentor, or spiritual guide He has called you to be.
The first and greatest step is surrendering your life to Jesus Christ. When Jesus becomes Lord and Savior, He begins transforming us from the inside out. He gives grace for our weaknesses, wisdom for our decisions, and strength for our responsibilities.
You do not have to be a perfect mother to be a faithful one. You do not have to have all the answers to keep trusting God. You can begin again. You can pray again. You can love again. You can grow again.
A Word to Children, Families, and the Church
As we celebrate mothers, let us not only give flowers, gifts, and cards. Let us also give honor. Let us give patience. Let us give support. Let us give prayer.
Many mothers carry responsibilities that others never see. They pray in secret. They sacrifice quietly. They worry silently. They keep going when they are tired. They love even when it is costly.
So today, let us celebrate them with sincerity.
Let us also remember spiritual mothers in the church and community. These are the women who encourage young believers, counsel families, pray for children, visit the sick, teach the Word, and model faithfulness. Their labour matters deeply in the Kingdom of God.
Proverbs 31:28 (KJV) says:
“Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.”
What a beautiful picture: children rising up to bless their mother. May we not wait until someone is gone before we speak words of love and appreciation. Let us honor mothers while they can hear it, feel it, and be encouraged by it.
Embracing the Call with Faith and Love
The strength of mothers in the Bible reminds us that motherhood is not only about giving birth. It is about nurturing life, standing in faith, carrying love, speaking wisdom, and trusting God through every season.
From Mary’s surrender, to Elizabeth’s patience, to Rahab’s courage, to the Canaanite woman’s persistence, we see that mothers have always played a powerful role in God’s story.
So to every mother, grandmother, spiritual mother, mentor, and mother-to-be: your love matters. Your prayers matter. Your faith matters. Your example matters. God sees the seeds you are planting, even when others do not.
May this Mother’s Day inspire us to honor mothers not just with words, but with action. May it remind us to value the women who have loved, raised, prayed, taught, corrected, and encouraged us. And may we never forget the power of a mother’s love when it is placed in the hands of God.
