Welcome to another episode of Health for the Spirit, Soul, and Body Blog from Doxa Missions. Mother’s Day is a wonderful time set aside to honor our mothers, but did you know it’s not originally a biblical or church-established holiday? Even so, its purpose aligns beautifully with biblical principles, reminding us of the strength, faith, and love exemplified by mothers throughout history. While the UK and other countries celebrate Mother’s Day on different dates, the sentiment remains universal.
Honoring Parents Every Day: A Biblical Mandate
Ephesians 6:2-3 (AMP) says, "Honor (esteem and value as precious) your father and your mother—this is the first commandment with a promise—that all may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth." This commandment highlights the importance of respecting and valuing our parents daily, not just on Mother’s Day. When we honor our parents, we invite God’s blessings into our lives, paving the way for a prosperous and long life.
Celebrating All Mothers: Biological, Spiritual, and Mothers-to-Be
Mother’s Day is not only a celebration for biological mothers but also for spiritual mothers and mothers-to-be. Young women can reflect on and prepare for the sacred journey of motherhood, understanding its significance and responsibilities. This day provides an opportunity for all women to reflect on the essence of motherhood.
Women’s Special Creation and Role in the Bible
Women hold a special place in God’s creation. Unlike man, who was formed from the dust, woman was made from man’s rib, signifying a unique creation. Despite cultural limitations in biblical times, many women in the Bible are celebrated for their significant roles and virtues:
Bathsheba: The mother of Solomon, she played a pivotal role in securing her son’s throne.
Rahab: The mother of Boaz, known for her courage and faith.
Elizabeth: The mother of John the Baptist, remembered for her faithfulness and patience.
Mary: The mother of Jesus epitomizes unwavering faith and sacrificial love.
These mothers demonstrate faith, love, courage, wisdom, and devotion, inspiring us to honor and emulate these qualities.
A Canaanite Mother’s Faith: An Inspirational Story
One powerful story is that of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21-28. Despite being a Gentile, she approached Jesus, pleading for her daughter’s healing. Even when Jesus initially rejected her request, she persisted with humility and faith, saying, “Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” Jesus, moved by her faith, granted her request, healing her daughter. This story exemplifies the relentless love and faith of a mother, inspiring us to persist in faith and love for our children.
Encouragement for All Mothers
Many mothers may reflect today, feeling they haven’t been the best. Remember, as long as there is life, there is hope. Luke 1:37 (KJV) assures us, “For with God nothing shall be impossible.” The first step to becoming a virtuous mother is accepting Jesus as your Lord and Savior. The next step is setting a goal and believing you can be the virtuous woman God intends you to be.
Let this Mother’s Day inspire all mothers to embrace their unique roles with renewed faith and dedication. Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below, and let’s continue this journey of growth and encouragement together.
